The #1 Thing to Focus On When Designing Your Short-Term Rental

There’s no shortage of opinions…

Maybe you’re a busy host and are worried about important things like making sure furniture is delivered, cleaning crews are hired, and listing photos are taken – so designing the vibe of your Airbnb may be just another complicated thing on your to do list.

Or maybe you’re like me (oh I see you, Pinterest-pinning, Houzz book-saving, Insta-drooling host), and designing the space, picking out decor, and layering in style is the Most. Fun. Part! And all the other business operations are the chore.

Either way, you’ve got some decisions to make on what your vacation rental includes, the vibe it gives off, and how to make your Airbnb stand out in listings and get a guest’s attention (and their credit card out).

So here’s the secret sauce to Airbnb design….

(drumroll….)

You’ve got to make it memorable.

Sure, there are lots of Airbnb hosts and management companies who will say that heads in beds matters most, so to maximize sleeping space. Or that thread count on sheets, or lengthy rules books with legalese, or a certain number of living room vs. outdoor photos matters. And those are important decisions. But the most important thing you can do as you set up, market, and welcome guests, is to make your place memorable.

There are so many ways to do it, and you can choose the ones that are easy and affordable and resonate with you and your space. Feature them in your listing photos, and make your Airbnb memorable with:

  • an irresistible coffee bar that looks clean and well-stocked
  • an Instagrammable wall that guests will be sure to pose in front of
  • an inviting reading nook – the coziest looking corner in your area
  • a brightly painted dining table, room, woodwork, or ceiling (consider carrying the color through your full space!)
  • a catchy cabin name and custom logo accessories
  • a killer local adventures guide featured on a corkboard, pretty chalkboard, or album
  • a full stocked family game table, staged and featured in listing photos mid-play. Let the photos tell a story of fun!

So. Many. Ideas.

And they all have one critical job – your one job, dear Airbnb host, is to make your place memorable. Make sure that your place stops the scroll, gets the booking, and delights the guests upon arrival.

Because guests are traveling to make memories. And here’s hoping they can’t wait to do that in your vacation rental.

Cheers!
